Baptism

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Matthew 28: 19-20

Our mission as a church is the Great Commission, with a focus on reaching those outside the church and seeing people become disciples, not just converts.  This means we have to "Be disciples, who make disciples." However, this mission has a clear emphasis on baptising people who respond to Jesus' invitation to relationship.

The word “baptism” comes from the Greek “baptizo” and was used to describe a ship sinking; it means to “drown, sink, plunge or soak” and was used to describe a ladle being immersed in and filled with a liquid - and so in keeping with many Christian traditions, we baptise adults publicly in our pool underneath the main platform.

As a church, we believe that being baptised should be one of the first steps a believer takes after accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord & Saviour, and is a step that we take as a public witness to the change that has already happenned within us.  It is not a "qualification" or a "graduation" that we have to prove good enough for, but rather it is a step we take to follow the example of Jesus who was himself baptised.  It is also not something we do to "get clean" but rather is a step we take to testify that Jesus has made us clean through His death and resurrection.  The Great Commission is a call to baptise disciples, and is therefore a step we take to show other people the evidence of our decision to die to our old ways of life, and live a new life as a disciple of Jesus.
