Bible Week 2025

Screen

I
n July we took three days to explore together in a greater depth than is possible on a Sunday what the Bible teaches us about the Second Coming of Jesus

Understanding the God Story

We laid some foundations for how we approach studying Revelation and put it into context within the big picture of God’s story

Understanding the Signs of the Times

We dived into biblical prophecy, and using Jesus’ biggest recorded sermon “The Olivet Discourse” as our base to look at what the Bible says will happen before, and when, Jesus returns

Understanding the End Story

Finally we zoomed into Revelation to look specifically at the events it prophecies will happen when Jesus returns, in an attempt to explain what is meant by things like Armageddon, the Rapture, the mark of the beast etc

The week was recorded, and a private YouTube link is available on request

Summer Teaching Series 2025

Main Title - PTB

Jesus is the Coming King, and He is coming back for a pure spotless bride (Eph 5:25-27).  But what condition is the bride in?

Jesus said he would build His church, and in the letters to the seven churches in Revelation we have a picture of Jesus taking a walk around His church to see how His bride is looking.  What He sees is a very mixed picture – whilst there are some bits that are beautiful, there is a lot that upsets Him and is unattractive and He asks John to write to the seven churches to challenge them to take an honest look at themselves.  His challenge is to put on their bridal dress – or risk missing the marriage.
Written to seven actual churches that John was the overseer of in modern day Turkey, none of these churches exist today.  In the book of Ezekiel, the prophet sees a picture of the presence of God leaving the temple, only to return after a period of judgement. In a similar way, the story of the seven churches should warn us of what can happen if we lose sight of whose we are and what our Coming Bridegroom expects of his bride.

How are we looking?

Week 1: Introduction: A Vision of the Bridegroom: Jesus is coming back for his bride, but how is she looking?
Week 2: Ephesus: The Loveless Church: Imagine falling out of love with Jesus and his Kingdom?
Week 3: Smyrna: The Suffering Church: Is it tough being a true disciple?
Week 4: Pergamum: The Compromising Church: Have you lost your cutting edge?
Week 5: Thyatira: The Divided Church: What do you allow over the threshold of your heart?
Week 6: Sardis: The Dead Church: Is it time to relight your fire?
Week 7: Philadelphia: The Faithful Church: What doors does God want you to open?
Week 8: Laodicea: The Lukewarm Church: Is God giving you a golden opportunity?

Spring Teaching Series 2025

1. Close Encounters Title Sl
In Jesus’ ministry as recorded in Mark we see that He encountered a wide variety of people from many different walks of life, in many different situations. We also see that He responded in different ways to different people, and whilst the truth of the gospel message doesn’t change, the vehicle in which it is delivered needs to be relevant to the culture, and the person, to whom we are sharing it.  What can we learn from the life of Jesus and his encounters with people?  What did He say?  How did He say it?  How did He make the person feel? And what was their response?

We are called to reach the lost, to Go and make Disciples, and to be witnesses to Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit.  But in today’s world, how do we do that? It has been said that we fish in a messy pool, and that the fish don’t come ready filleted, but how do we preach the truth but offer grace?

As we seek to be a church of disciples who make disciples, how can we grow personally and reach others with the message of the cross?  And is our church culture one that welcomes people into a safe place where they can hear, and respond, to the invitation to repent and follow Jesus?

Summer Teaching Series 2024

Matthew 28:18-20: Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.  Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
It's exciting to be a follower of Jesus!  And as we get to know Jesus better, and our Christian life develops, sharing that excitement with others is part of the adventure of faith.  But how can we do that in a world that today largely considers Christianity to boring, untrue or irrelevant?  Actually, the world we are in today is not much different to the world of the Bible on that score!

Paul went on 3 missionary journeys, and Acts recounts his adventures as he traveled around the mediterranean. In our series we will look at the different places Paul preached and planted churches, and consider the wide variety of different situations that he found himself in.  We will consider what he had to deal with and overcome, and how he found ways to communicate  the good news to people of different cultures, different social values, with different issues and beliefs, and had different responses to the same gospel message.

Alongside the events recorded in Acts, the New Testament also provides us with letters that Paul wrote to the churches he planted, and these give us an added insight into the background – the different churches, people, experiences and challenges they faced.  As we look at each of the churches he planted, we will take time to see what issues those churches faced that we also face 2000 years later, and what we can learn from Paul’s trip around the Mediterranean.

Spring Teaching Series 2024

Developing Dreams
Joel 2:28-29: “I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions.”
Jesus invites us to live an abundant life, a life to the full that is beyond our dreams.  To truly experience this, we are invited to go on an adventure of faith that moves us beyond our previous experiences into new areas of discovery, moving in step with the Holy Spirit as He reveals God’s plans for us step by step.  But the biggest work that God ever does is the work to shape our character to be people He can use and trust, and unfortunately recent history is littered with examples of people who started well, experienced success, but failed to last the distance because their character weaknesses created footholds the enemy exploited.

As we enter 2024, we are about to go on some big adventures of faith that will shape who we are and how we move forward in the plans God has for both of our congregations.  I believe it is important that as we step into this next season in the life of Burton Elim Church, we allow God to shape our character so that we last the distance and see the dreams and visions Holy Spirit reveals succeed.

Joseph is a great biblical example God has given us to learn how this can happen.  When we first meet him as a gifted 17-year-old he is hearing the voice of God speaking to him about the future, but at this stage his character is not ready to handle all that God wants to achieve through him and as a result he is carried off into an adventure he never dreamed of.  In this series we will explore the different experiences Joseph has of how God shapes his character to be able to use him to achieve great things, as God moves him from the pit to the palace.  I pray we will discover how God wants to shape our character as individuals so that we can move forward with the right heart into the next season and see the plans He has for the church through 2024 and beyond succeed.

Autumn 2023 Sunday Morning Series

Holy Spirit - WDYSIA - Full No

From Sunday 8th October until 19th November, both our congregations followed a Sunday morning series called "Who Do You Say I Am? (Holy Spirit)", the third of our series looking at the nature and heart of the God we worship.  Each week our preaching team in both locations looked at who the Holy Spirit is, and what He wants to do in us and through us.

The series was accompanied by time on the Sunday evenings with time aside to allow the Holy Spirit to move.

For the two previous "Who Do You Say I Am?" series, see our YouTube Channel
  • Who Do You Say I Am? (Father): This was a series exploring the names God the Father used to reveal Himself to His people, and ran from 15th May to 31st July 2022
  • Who Do You Say I Am? (Jesus): This was a series exploring the I AM statements Jesus made to help us understand Him and His misson, and ran from 11th Sept to 23rd Oct 2022

Planning your Visit

New to Church?

Welcome! Whether you've just moved to the area, or have lived here all your life, we hope our website helps you to find out everything you want to know about our Church.

Key information about the church...

Where & when does the church meet?

We are "One Church in Two Locations" and  meet every Sunday at 10:30am at both of our buildings.

Moor StPrincess Street

Moor Street, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, DE14 3SU and Princess Street, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, DE14 2NR

We have limited parking at Moor Street and sadly there is no dedicated parking at Princess Street, you will need to find street parking nearby, but there is usually parking not too far away and we would encourage you to plan to arrive in time to find a space.

More details can be found on our locations page

What should I expect when I visit?

You will receive a very warm welcome at both of our locations, and our Welcome Teams will be happy help and answer your questions.

Each week our services
have a time of sung worship, communion and a Bible based message relevant to today.  We encourage our congrgeation to participate and so there is usually opportunity to pray, be prayed for, and share words of encouragement.

Refreshments
Tea, coffee and biscuits are served before the morning service at Princess Street and after the service at Moor Street. Both venues offer plenty of time to meet new people and ask more questions.

What happens to the kids at church?

Children stay with their parents at the start of the service in both congregations so we can worship together, before going out to their own age related activities.  We do ask that for safeguarding reasons, children are pre-registered when you arrive.

We have a fantastic Sunday based Church for Kids programme that runs in our community centre building (The Corner) across the road from the main building.  We ask parents to accompany their children across the road, and also to pick them up once the service has finished.  Every Sunday we offer:

  • Little Stars (3-5 years - Pre-School age)
  • Shooting Stars (5-7 years - Infant School age)

Our children's work runs in a room behind the main worship area in the same building as the main congregation, and every Sunday we offer a single 5-11 year olds group

Is there anything for Youth?

Their programme varies week to week; usually they meet in the room behind the platform in the main building, apart from on the second Sundays when they join with the Church for Kids in The Corner building, and on fourth Sundays they saty in the main congregation adn are encouraged to get involved.

Is there a dress code?

No! Please just be yourself and come dressed in your 'normal' clothes.

Will I have to join in?
